To my dearest unicorn

2016, Monotype print on paper, 50 * 38 cm / 20 * 15 in /each * 12

A unicorn is inhabited in a forest.

He doesn’t know why he is here. He can't remember anything that happened before, just like he will not remember today in the future - from the morning is moistened by the dewdrop on the petal to the gloaming is dyed by the glow of the clouds, his memory can only last for one day.

On this ordinary day, the unicorn finds a girl in a red cloak floating by the river.

Although he doesn’t care about her life, but with his omniscience, he knows the mammal with two less hairy legs should not be left in the water.

Without using much effort, the unicorn drags her ashore and saves her.

"Human, I will look after you." The unicorn thinks that he needs to talk to her at the moment.

He knows that “look after” is the special needs of human beings. The baby elephant knows how to drag mother's tail to walk; The newborn fish knows how to swim immediately. But humans need to be looked after.

"I didn't expect to see you again," the girl says in her heart. "You have been looking after me for a long time."

Originally, the unicorn had memories that transcend any species on Earth once.

He should have remembered that in this forest with only one unicorn, the girl and he were the closest companion. They crossed the grassy wilderness. On that day, the girl held six randomly-picking red cattails. The plants passing by on the road had three hundred forty-two thousand three hundred and ninety-two colors. The wind blew seven times and once blew off the hat on her cloak.

He should have remembered that they hunted in the forest. The unicorn, which only needs moonlight and water, was not surprised by the appetite of human beings. The mist they saw when they set out in the early morning, dispersed after fifty-two minutes. The girl’s braid had sixteen knots. Even carried the best bow and arrow didn't prevent her from not hitting any of the prey. On the way back, she was careful, but her left foot was still stepping into a puddle. So the forty-one traces of mud on her skirt became the only harvest of this hunting.

The girl liked unicorn. This kind of like made her lazy. She was good at running, but since she can ride the unicorn as a horse, why she  supposed to use her own legs? "ride?" The unicorn can't feel he like or dislike the behavior that only humans can think of, so he let her do whatever she wanted.

He just didn't care at all. The weight he can carry depends entirely on the weight of this thing in his heart. The unicorn had no feelings, thus the towering hill was as heavy as the cloud of dust, thus the endless grassland is as heavy as a fluttering stem. Because the girl meant nothing to his heart, so she was as light as air on his back.

However, he was willing to accompany the girl to any destination. As for why he was willing to, the unicorn didn't find the answer through two-second thought so he just ignored it. For two seconds, it is a long time for him. Because the unicorn is born to only use instinct to do everything. Even if it was only two seconds, this was the first thing he thought about in his eternal life.

After that, he felt that the girl was a little heavier than the leaf that had fallen on his back.

Once, they trekked for a long time, trying to reach a castle that was impossible to reach. The unicorn had already known the result before they go, but since the girl had an extraordinary enthusiasm for it, they go.

The girl likes watching the unicorn drinks water. He tilted his head down to the surface of the water, and the lines on his neck and back formed a soft but firm curve. Most importantly, the shaking reflection in the water was like it looked at her beloved unicorn. She was greedy and innocent, always felt that her favorite unicorn became two at that time.

"Do you know how many hairs are there in your tail?"

"Now it has one hundred five thousand eight hundred sixteen."

"I want twenty of them to make strings."

"No."

"You have so many! They are only a little of the fractions of yours."

"They are 0.00012657% of mine."

"That's it! I want them!"

"No."

The girl still cut the hair on his tail. Anyway, she knew that the unicorn would not be angry.

After that, the unicorn felt that the girl was a little heavier than the moonlight he is living on.

In this way, the girl's weight in his heart was as same as the moon. However, the unicorn didn't know what was the meaning. In his world, as long as the night falls on the clouds, the moon that has been hanging in the sky since the first species on the Earth exist always shines on him. No matter how far the distance between the moon and the scenery surrounded the unicorn, no matter how isolated the moon looks like, the moonlight never breaks its promise - shines on the unicorn every night. The only moon that may be dim or bright in this universe, even if it is a matter of life and death, it was too familiar to attract his attention. The girl was like the moon.

However, the girl knew a lot about "this weight."

Years by years, they were companions. On the first hundredth full moon night the unicorn saw, the faint glow that only appeared when he was young in his body faded away. From now on, he has eternal life.

They lived a quiet and peaceful life for a very long time. Until one day, the unicorn suddenly realized that the forest seemed to have lost a season - the mild and rainy spring had not arrived yet, and the drought and untimely high temperatures in winter had lasted for three months. A little spark at this time can cause intense mountain fire.

The unicorn noticed the mountain fire before it arrived. But the girl was not around: she went alone by the river to find a unicorn-shaped stone. The unicorn knew how weak a human was in front of the violent nature, so he headed toward the river – through the vines intertwined in the jungle, through the shoals that cross the high tide, and through the plains that can see the distant fire. “She is waiting for me," he thought.

The unicorn found the girl in the place he had expected. She stood at the twists and turns of the river bank, with fallen grass on her feet, and her hands were empty. As the unicorn expected, there was no stone that the girl was looking for.

They needed to go to a safe place. The unicorn carried the girl on his back for a while, and his running speed was slowing down. The girl noticed that this was something that had never happened before.

She understood why this happened immediately – the unicorn is carrying “the weight in his heart.”

She had to start thinking about parting. After all, the entire life of the unicorn is as long as the moon while she is not. Therefore, even the unicorn that does not have any feelings, he has enough time to comprehend the loss.

But the girl loves the unicorn a lot.

"For yourself, you can do whatever you want, right?"

"Yes."

"Forget everything happened before. Don't remember anything in the future."

"Ok." The unicorn said.  He had long been used to agreeing to all the requests of the girl.

So the unicorn immediately forgot all, including the girl. He will be no memory in the future.

The fire was coming. The unicorn suddenly realized that this walk-upright animal on his back was a burden. He dropped her off, then galloped in a safe direction and never looked back.

The girl returned to the river with peace of mind. The smoke made her unable to open her eyes, and she fell into the water. She didn't know how long she had drifted until a few days later she met with the unicorn again.

The unicorn saved the girl. However, the mind of this most incredible creature in the world was not shaken by her awakening.  He  can't remember anything that happened before, just like he won't remember today in the future.

Therefore, the girl decides to stay.

She is willing to let the unicorn know her again every day.

"Because there is only one dearest you in the world."
