Public Sculpture: Minuet, Xinchuan School

2020-2021

Commissioned by Xinchuan Foreign Language School, a private K-12 institution in Chengdu spanning over 26 acres, Minuet is a site-specific sculpture designed by Wushuang for the campus where students spend their formative years.

The work draws inspiration from the minuet, a graceful Baroque dance form characterized by its lilting rhythm and structured elegance. Echoing the musical qualities of brightness and buoyancy, the sculpture invites young viewers into a space of play and imagination. Through its lyrical form, Minuet transforms the physical environment into one infused with the spirit of movement, rhythm, and childhood wonder.

Wushuang considered the school as more than an educational institution—it is also a playground, a dining hall, a space of rest, and a second home. The sculpture aims to support children’s well-being by offering not only aesthetic pleasure but also an interactive structure that encourages engagement and creative exploration. Whether students are gazing at it, climbing on it, or simply resting beside it, Minuet becomes part of their lived experience—a visual and spatial composition that allows their imaginations to dance.
